  1. -We do not really know what Shakespeare looked like! No portraits were painted of Shakespeare whilst he was still alive!

  2. He was born from father John Shakespeare, a glover and alderman (basically, somebody who would have been part of the local council, having some authority) and mother Mary Arden, who was the daughter of a supposedly wealthy farmer.

  3. William attended the local grammar school in Stratford where his parents lived, and would have studied primarily Latin ,rhetoric, logic and literature.

  4. Shakespeare never published any of his plays! His family members were illiterate, and no one knows his birthday.

  7. Shakespeare wrote thirty-seven plays and composed one hundred and fifty-four sonnets, Shakespeare was also an actor who performed many of his own plays.

    Shakespeare was buried in the Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon. He put a curse on anyone daring to move his body from that final resting place. His epitaph was:


    Good friend for Jesus' sake forbear,
    To dig the dust enclosed here:
    Blest be the man that spares these stones,
    And curst be he that moves my bones.

    Though it was customary to dig up the bones from previous graves to make room for others, Shakespeare's remains are still undisturbed.

  8. Shakespeare invented the word "assassination"

    Of the 154 sonnets or poems, the playwright penned, his first 26 were said to be directed to an aristocratic(privileged) young man who did not want to marry.

  10. The exact date of Shakespeare's birth in 1564 is unknown although it is believed to fall on 23rd April, the same date as his death in 1616. We do however know that he was baptized on 26th April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon.

  11. There has been dispute as to William Shakespeare's sexual orientation. Some readers believe that some of Shakespeare's sonnets point to love for a young man, however others disagree, giving the argument that they are an expression of friendship and nothing more.

  13. William and Anne Shakespeare had three children. Their first child was Susanna, born a mere six months after the wedding of her parents. She was christened on May 26, 1583, and twins arrived in January, 1585. They were baptized on February 2 of that year and named Hamnet and Judith, after two very close friends of William. Tragically, Hamnet Shakespeare died of unknown causes in August 1596, at the age of eleven.

  15. He made nearly 1500 words in the english language including eyeball, puking, obscene and elbow! It makes you wonder what they called the elbow before Shakespear wrote it, that pointy thing in the middle of the arm?

He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights.
